Did you know that your basic human rights are not protected by law in Australia?

Human rights are the fundamental freedoms and protections that belong to all of us, so that:

  • Everyone is treated equally, regardless of our sexuality, race, gender, age, or beliefs.
  • Everyone can see a doctor and receive the medical care they need regardless of their bank account balance.
  • Everyone can receive an education regardless of their postcode.

With a Human Rights Act, the government would need to respect human rights when making decisions, including our right to adequate housing, a healthy environment, education, health, and more.

But right now, Australia’s laws are failing to protect our fundamental freedoms, and without a Human Rights Act, there’s almost nothing Australians can do if they suffer a human rights abuse. Because of this, powerful people continue to abuse human rights.

The devastating reality is that, today, pensioners are living in their cars, and single parents and their children are couch surfing as house and rental prices skyrocket. People can no longer afford to access healthcare. Bushfires, floods, and droughts continue to wreak havoc on Australians across the country.

The time is now. Implementing a Human Rights Act in law would make a meaningful improvement to all our lives. A Human Rights Act that protects all rights will mean everyone, everywhere can live with the dignity and respect they deserve.

By legislating a national Human Rights Act, we can create better lives for ourselves and for those around us. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has the power to protect and defend all our human rights. Call on him to legislate a Human Rights Act now.

Dear Prime Minister,

I am writing to you to ask you to protect our rights under a Human Rights Act that will ensure that all our lives are better and that we can create a better world for ourselves and our fellow human beings.

Human Rights are the basic freedoms and protections that belong to every one of us. They ensure every single person is treated equally and justly. They are based on dignity, mutual respect, and compassion regardless of race, sexuality and gender identity, religion or beliefs. Rights are about being treated, and treating others fairly, and ensuring everyone has the ability to make choices about their own lives. When we protect human rights, all our lives are better and we can create a better world for ourselves and our fellow human beings.

I ask you to legislate a Federal Human Rights Act that ensures all fundamental rights are protected and appropriately balanced. A human rights act should contain as a minimum: the right to recognition and equality, right to life, right to freedom of movement, right to privacy and reputation, right to religion and belief, right to peaceful assembly and freedom of association, cultural rights (right to enjoy culture, declare and practise religion and use their language), rights to education and the rights of children in the criminal process, and their access to health care.

Sincerely,
