Amnesty International Australia is concerned that the Migration Amendment (Prohibiting Items in Immigration Detention) Bill 2020 as it stands violates international rules and will be detrimental to the well-being of people under the care of the Australian Government in immigration detention.
The Bill is designed to ‘fix’ an issue that does not exist – it warrants power to officers over detainees that are not needed. Amnesty International Australia recommends that the Bill is not passed in its current form.
Amnesty works to support refugees and asylum seekers. We challenge injustice by campaigning for the Australian government to raise the humanitarian intake, improve community sponsorship and end offshore detention. Learn more about our Refugee Rights campaign here.
