How I joined Amnesty: As a group member over 40 years ago - My interests: Relationship building, supporting and empowering local action groups

How I joined Amnesty: I became a member of Amnesty around 15 years ago when I joined my local community group. We were a group that was passionate about advocating for prisoners of conscience and for the rights of refugees. My interests: I’m interested in strengthening human rights advocacy in our region to create positive change and strengthen communities by improving access to rights and increasing social inclusion.

How I joined Amnesty: As a group member then convener of the Brisbane City group - My interests: Supporting local activism, governance, contributing to human rights

How I joined Amnesty: I found ALC through searching through the Amnesty Australia website and thought that it would such a great place to become an activist. My interests: Community engagement especially with children and youth, policies and understanding politics that help marginalized people's livelihood and empowering communities to make their voices heard.

How I joined Amnesty: In Adelaide, South Australia after starting an activist group Adelaide for Assange My interests: Advocate for free speech, free press and protecting whistle-blowers.

How I joined Amnesty: during high school, and have since held a range of roles such as Board director, Branch Committee member, Tasmania Branch President, past member of a range of groups and networks, and current member of the North-West Tasmania group. My interests: growing and stabilising the Tasmanian ALC, to support and connect activists in Tasmania and provide clear strategic leadership for the region.

How I joined Amnesty: I have been a longtime supporter of Amnesty International, previously in the UK and now in Australia. In both countries I believe the collective choices we make between optimism and pessimism, between hope and giving in, could still yet become the story of our societies. Amnesty International is fundamentally committed to the belief that things can and must be changed for the better, often by a thousand small decisions to try to help, day-by-day. I am fundamentally committed to that vision. My interests: I am passionate about human rights. Professionally I am the Executive Chairman of a non profit organisation called the Healthcare Leadership Academy which seeks to strengthen health systems across the world. In my medical practice I work between London and Melbourne, although during the pandemic I worked for Public Health England helping to support the UK's pandemic response. From a nonprofit perspective I sit on the International Council of Action Against Hunger. I also head the HLA research Unit- helping to lead the joint research department we have with UCLan. I have a passion for medical education having written and taught on several Masters/PGCert level university modules.
