Join us for a free screening of the documentary ‘Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea.’ World Refugee Day is a day to showcase to world leaders that the public cares about the well being of refugees and that every country needs to take part in doing their fair share for refugees.
This documentary shows a personal story of a family from northern Afghanistan as they set out on a journey across the globe seeking safety, make their way through Indonesia, and putting the fate of their family in the hands of strangers. Across borders, behind bars and onto a smuggler’s boat – the family chase freedom.
The film is an inside look at the journey many refugees face, and includes interviews from asylum seekers, as well as hidden camera footage, and in the words of asylum seekers themselves, the story of the ‘refugee’ is told.
After the screening, enjoy pizza and a discussion of the film—what circumstances make it necessary for asylum seekers to leave their home, and what they must face before they reach safety in a new country.
After learning more about the personal accounts of real refugees, engage in discussion on the rights of asylum seekers and refugees, and how we can protect and promote the rights of these vulnerable people.
Hosted by the Amnesty International Cairns Action Group this event is open to the public, and not just staff and students. While this event is free, bookings are essential as there will be a limited number of seats available.
